You don't need to run lms on both machines.  You can run lms on the
linux machine and just grab the windows version of squeezeplay to run on
the window machine.  

In this configuration, you would only need samba setup so that you can
manage/organize your music files with your windows PC.

I have a similar setup - a linux box running open Suse that has all of
my music files and runs squeezeboxserver (the predecessor to lms).  My
squeezeboxes all point to this.  I have squeezeplay installed on my
laptop so I can play music through it if I so desire.
