I used to run Squeezecenter on my ReadyNAS, and went through the same
thing recently as I had to re-flash my NAS for unrelated reasons and
wanted to make sure I didn't have to go through re-tweaking and config
again.

I moved my config to an Ubuntu 10.4 LTS VM running on Virtualbox
(converted from VMWare). It was originally VMWare because I built it in
Workstation and could run VM Ware server on the ReadyNAS. When I updated
the ReadyNAS I could only run Virtualbox so I migrated it there so I
wouldn't have to run any other machines. I think Virtualbox is a better
choice at this point since you don't have to worry about licensing and
the vmware free products aren't updated as much.

I found the performance of the library over 1GBit/NFS to be as good as
native. If you keep the mount points the same you can keep your library
anywhere. When I re-flashed I just changed the mount points on the vm
and ran the vm on a laptop so I could listen to everything while I was
re-building the NAS. I think its the only way to go if you have the
knowledge and equipment.

You can also grab the virtualbox image of squeezeplug which is already
configured. It may be a more optimal solution depending on what plugins
and such you need.
