Sure but John was planning on using PWM outputs so that the LED was
“dimmable”. What I’m suggesting is a lot simpler. Just use a single
colored LED which is driven by one of the GPIO pins of the processor.
The software simply turns the LED on when ‘play’ is initiated and turns
it of when ‘pause’ or ‘stop’ is initiated. This way,  the LED provides a
simple status of what the player is doing. 
I have no idea how difficult this is to implement from the software
side. But from the hardware side this should be very simple and straight
forward.
