This is utterly bizarre. I have no explanation for this observed issue. After hours of fudging with reinstalls, recoding the original offending audio file(s) umpteen times - there are 2 of the 'buggers' - with no postive outcome - either a noise blast at the end of the file, or when this was absent then a loud noise click when switching to another track, I finally renamed the files to move the offending file so that it plays first in the track list rather than as the last track.
Result: no noise, no clicks. In more than almost 2 years of use, I've never encountered this sort of problem before this last week. AS I only ever play albums, and not being a purist, then the reordered track listing doesn't really bother me!
