The recent discussion about frame size and sync troubleshooting makes me wonder about the how other system integrators convince themselves of implementation correctness. Are there tools to build a deterministic "bit perfect" data stream in WAV format, compare the output of a S/PDIF data stream for correctness, and then compare the output from a DAC for correctness? Perhaps a WAV truth file of exactly 1 second at 20KHz, then decrementing by 500 Hz every second may define a truth data set.
