One thing I would like to have tested if at all possible is some of those external interfaces people have been requesting. I'm providing a lot of USB ports on this, just so people CAN plug in things like IR receivers, relay boxes to turn amps on and off, stuff like that.
The first version is not going to have a builtin display or IR receiver, but WILL have HDMI out and USB connections for things like Flirc. I would like to get some feedback from normal listening situations on the importance of other builtin UIs. Do you constantly wish that it had a builtin IR receiver, is it useless to you since it does not? Is having a builtin touch display a "must have"? Is having an HDMI jack to an external display sufficient or does it really need to be builtin? Part of what I want a beta group for is to use it in normal usage patterns and see if the feature set meets the needs or if it's important to come up with subsequent versions with different features. Its a lot easier to have some of these discussions with a smaller initial group. It's nice to have some idea of how people actually used it. How popular is the builtin server, how many people use wired VS wireless? This will help us understand where to go with development. Are people interested in using it separately from another network but still want to use iPeng etc (ie. having the player host it's own wireless network). Having a beta group helps to get focused feedback on issues like this.
