I've been testing a USB DAC this evening - HifiMeDiy Sabre USB DAC. Digital to Audio Converter 96khz/24bit. It's working, but really crackly. I've tried -a 80:4 and also -o plughw:CARD=DAC,DEV=0 n piCorePlayer -a 80:4:24_3:1 as suggested on the homepage. Anyone got any ideas - anyone got this (admittedly very cheap) DAC working? Setting up a second Pi is proving tricky at the moment, but we'll get there ;-) The first one running into HDMI is much easier...
