Might be worth documenting the "special cases" with the default devices..... HDMI: Must disable mmap with "-a :::0". sgtl5000: Must force 16 bit audio with "-a ::16:" to avoid distortion when device is opened at default 24 bit. (Only an issue with 3.0.35 kernel. Not a problem with mainline.) spdif (TOSLINK) should work up to 192k, without any options. You may need to limit the sample rate if the receiving equipment isn't capable of 192k. eg. "-r 96000".
