Unfortunately it kicked in for me while being left unattended playing
44k radio..

Agree completely.   In fact, for me having HDMI working at all is very
minor - it may well come in handy one day - but the main thing for me is
USB audio with SPDIF / toslink secondary.  But I do realise others
having different priorities/expectations.
