Same here with Amanero and Buffalo, no issues with sample rate changes, PCM -> PCM, or PCM -> DoP. Also, yes sometimes also notice first few frames lost at the start of a DoP track. What I think is happening here, is yes, Amanero firmware. It is waiting for x number of frames of DoP to be recognised before decoding them as DSD. I think those frames are being dropped on the floor.
