OK, got to the bottom of this.

Two things:

1) I was running SqueezeLite 1.4 whereas the latest release is 1.5. A
simple update fixed that.

2) I still had Alsa ( -a xxx:x ) settings in place which it seems
conflict with the -o hw:CARD command. SqueezeLite v.1.5 traps this and
brings up the help menu which is when I realised the Alsa settings
conflicted.

So SqueezeLite is now working OK with -o hw:CARD. Unfortunately it makes
absolutely no difference to the clicks when using the UCA202 which I
think are the consequence of noise on the USB power/signal lines and
that the UCA202 probably has very limited noise filtering.

If I get the chance, I will try a USB isolator with the UCA202 to see
whether it makes any difference. I've ordered a low-cost one from China
but it may not arrive in time before I have to return the UCA202 to
Amazon (within 30 days of purchase).

The isolator has a built-in DC-to-DC converter which is supposed to
reduce noise transfer, but we'll see!
