Not sure, but it's easy to miss a bit of needed configuration with
layman first time out. First of all, check you have this line in
/etc/portage/make.conf:

source /var/lib/layman/make.conf
--------------------
Otherwise portage won't see any of layman's repos.
As for layman's own config, could you post it here so we can have a
look?
/var/lib/layman/make.conf
and
/etc/layman/layman.cfg
One thing that occurs is that recent portage has changed its defaults to
include FEATURES="userpriv", which has caused problems for me in certain
cases, so it's possible the repo might have some permission issues. read
man make.conf to understand what this feature does - just a
possibility...
