Have you tried the functionality that is there now? 

I do this as well (scratch mount drives for backups) and what is there
now, works for me. Try it and report back.

Plug in the drive, web-gui -> Storage, from the "Mount Local File
System" section, select the drive partition from the drop-down, select
auto as the fstype, select a mount point from the drop-down,
(/mnt/disk[1-5] have been added as available user mount points if you
already have something mounted to /storage), and "Mount".

When finished, from "User Controlled File Systems" section, select
unmount from the action drop-down and "Submit".
