I worked out how to test using speaker-test & find the same sort of
problem, so it's not Squeezelite. In dmesg I see lots of messages of the
type: "cannot submit datapipe for urb 0, error -28: not enough
bandwidth".

I tried running the test with lower -r options (eg -r 12000 instead of
48000) but get the same problem.
My Thinkpad T60p has 3 USB2.0 ports - do you know what is the audio
bandwidth limit? 

To run 3 Squeezelite instances would I need a machine with USB3 ports?
