By default squeezelite will "synchronously" resample - so it resamples
to a multiple of the original sample rate.  This is the highest multiple
of the source sample rate which matches or is below the maximum rate the
dac supports.  So in your case for 44.1 it will resample to 88.2k.  If
you want it to resample to 96k then add X to the -R command:
-r 96000 -R X
