I think the issue is not a sample rate limit but a format limit. I could only get S16_LE no matter what I did. Also, even when listening via HDMI, hw0,0 was active instead of hw0,1. The formats used to be defined by hard coded struct definitions. Now they are calculated. Not sure when that changed or what the effect is.
