There is the option to change the remote control protocol in the squeezebox. This means you can have two in one room with different controllers. The alternative is jvc dvd control. See player settings > remote on LMS.
Another bodge is to put a bit of tape over the IR receptor on one box. If you set the volume as fixed rather than 100%, the volume control on the variable squeezebox shouldn't affect the fixed one. Again see settings> audio on your player interface. Finally use a diferent remote preamp on both devices.
