Fair enough, I now understand the reason for choosing the keys that way.
There was no keyboard support for the slider widget in jivelite or
squeezeplay before 6b880433e7a0bf73da66a19bc10d3c8c378269ee was
committed.  If you revert the change to ui/Slider.lua the slider doesn't
work at all with the remote or keyboard unless you specifically add code
to handle it in the applet.

Other than the test and amixer applets, I haven't found the slider used
anywhere else.  Surely, I'm not the only one who finds in weird that I
have to use the down button on the remote or keyboard to increase the
volume and the up button to turn the volume down? 

If you install the ALSA Mixer applet, which relies on the defaults from
jivelite you'll see what I mean
