FWIW, I use a Pi B AS my home NAS. I have 2 large USB drives connected to the Pi and shared via samba. These drives contain both my music and video collections. I haven't measured performance, but it is fast enough to stream video to my XBMC player from those drives, even 1080p content, without stuttering. That's fast enough for me.
