That's the first thing I tried - no luck at all - Fil browser 'sees' my
readynas and also the Pi Logitech Media Server.

Yes both of these are started.

I don't think it is - I can read (I haven't tried writing) to the share
by mapping it to a network drive (using \\192.168.0.4\share_rw) - it
just won't show up in the file browser!
