I have never seen this, but a google search found this:

  - In “Settings” Category “Window > Colours”, enable “Allow terminal
    to use xterm 256-colour mode”.
  - In “Settings” Category “Connection > Data”, enable “Terminal-type
    string” by entering the string “xterm-256color” (*Note:* This choice
    is not avaibale in Windows version of Putty)
  - Enter your hostname and start a client session.
