Thanks Greg.  I probably did not make myself clear, but I have rebooted
each time I changed the audio output.  I have even unplugged and the
replugged the pi.
One thing that I changed before I read your post was that I changed the
streaming from 'Direct' to 'proxied'.  That might have fixed it.  So
far, so good.  But I have said that before.

Which buffer setting are you referring to?  The option below the ALSA
setting on the picore player webppage?  What is a good size?  Or do you
mean the variable in the ALSA setting?  Right now that is set at ::32:0,
which as Steen posted is the default for HDMI.
