Thanks Greg. As I wrote above, I even changed routers to make sure it was the board that wouldn't connect to Ethernet. I also used different Ethernet cables and yes, they were plugged in firmly on both ends. The port lights on the routers and the Pi2 board were lit when they were plugged in. The dang thing just wouldn't connect. It's history now. See above.
