It should work as a native USB drive.  It should show up as /dev/sda1  
(If you only have one USB drive plugged in).   You may want to change
the format of the drive.   
Since pCP loads the root fs into ram, I would keep pCP running from the
SDcard, and just use the hard drive as a data storage device.

I would compare prices, there is no reason you cannot use a off the
shelf USB hard disk.   I've had a 1TB MyBook hooked up for years.
