Thanks for the quick reply.

I've confirmed that it was a link by creating a file on the CIFS store
and could then see it in /usr/local/slimserver/Cache
I did not then try the UID stuff but followed your advice to store it
somewhere else ... and stuck a 1GB USB stick in.
So - am now able to start-up - and music is being scanned.
