Thanks very much for your replies, Ronnie and Michael. I finished up installing 7.9 on Wheezy, which works fine.
(Now all I have to do is figure out how to reinstall MusicIP, which I had hoped never to have to do again after the sweat, blood and tears it cost me last time!) All this was because I did the routine upgrade of a smoothly-running ubuntu 14.04 to 16.04.1, which completely demolished the OS. I don't just mean a bit: I mean dozens and dozens of errors so that the log gave up under the innundation, and the system expired with a groan.
