Thanks Ronnie. That worked perfectly. The Pi3 you've fixed is in my
workshop. After switching it on every morning I'd have to go back to the
house & home office to boot up the PC to adjust the volume. After a few
weeks it was beginning to get a little irritating. Especially with the
inviolable no-outdoor-shoes-in-the-house rule.

Back to the other problem with the USB audio. I have just tried the Pi2
with an analogue speaker connected to the jack. It outputs evenly to
both channels. I don't know if this means anything but I thought I
should mention it.
