I've used several different 2TB to 4TB WD My Passport, selfpowered (USB powered) portable HDs with both rPi3B+ and rPi4B setups. Never had any issue. Some have reported problems with rPi4B ver 1, with drive plugged into the USB3.0 slots on the rPi. I've not had that issue, but my rPi4B's are ver. 1.2.
