I don't know if it's directly relevant or not, but several months back I
set up a FreeNAS server on an old(ish) Dell. I have an old SSD in a USB3
enclosure that I connected to a USB3 port. It would work fine for a
while, then I'd get a notification that it had disconnected. Sometimes
it would work for days, sometimes for hours, sometimes only for minutes.
Connecting it to a USB2 port never gave me any grief at all.

Eventually I got a large traditional (i.e., not SSD) USB3 hard drive
with an external power supply and connected that to a USB3 port. It's
never given me a moment's trouble and in fact is my primary music drive,
feeding multiple LMS servers and hardware/software players all over the
house.

So I don't know if Something Bad happens when you try to power an
external drive via USB3 that isn't an issue with USB2, but for now
that's my best guess.
