FWIW I've been running without them for a month and haven't noticed any
issues (although I don't play many files in exotic formats, so maybe I
wouldn't).

I notice that faad helpfully prints the following message:

The last line is a worry, since the latest commit to that repository was
two months ago for a security issue.  Evidently the binary in the
container image hasn't been recently rebuilt from that source.
