Paul, the section that has been posted includes the line:

which looks wrong to me. All my name entries just have plain text. I
had assumed that the ALSA settings had been generated by alsamixer but
maybe some other method has been used.
Alternativley do \0302 and \0262 mean that there are non-ascii
characters in the name and could that be the cause of the problem?
