My first attempt was with the Pi's USB port. But suspecting that might
be an issue, subsequent efforts have all been with the E30 powered
separately.

That said, the advice at the Topping setup page
(https://docs.picoreplayer.org/projects/add-topping-e30-usb-dac/)
suggests otherwise:
"Step 4 - Connect Topping E30 USB DAC
Connect the 2 USB cables (supplied) from the Raspberry Pi USB2 ports to
Topping E30"

On temperature, good to know that overheating shouldn't be an issue for
now.

As of now, if I connect pi without the USB cable output to E30, it will
start, with IPs for both LAN and wifi visible on the network, but
Squeezelite will not run. Is that because the Output Settings for the
E30 are reading hw:CARD=E30,DEV=0. i.e Squeezelite finds no device and
can't load?

If I start up with everything connected, the music flows for a few
minutes then stops and the Pi disappears from the network entirely.

Might there still be issues with IP addresses? I've set no static IPs,
but maybe that would make a difference?

Throughout the process I have left the pi connected via Ethernet
directly to the router? Is that correct procedure?

Any logs I can consult or forward that might suggest the problem?

thx
