The active speakers don't have vol controls, just trim pots for various
freq corrections and RCA and XLR inputs, so it's just PCP
(squeezelite/jivelite?) that is doing vol control. Hmm - maybe wrong
thread!
The ALSA mixer settings were at the those you mentioned already.

The noises are:
1) Boot up squealing
2) Background hiss
3) Transport change (vol/pause etc.) clicks

After some testing I found that if I switched to a USB DAC with the
display back on, the boot up noise disappeared so it's something to do
with the DAC HAT. I found that the noises are in time with the activity
LED so I guess there's some interference issue.

Background hiss varied widely between different DACs.

The transport/vol change clicks/glitches are definitely more noticeable
using RCA (12dB more sensitive than XLR) and on quiet tracks. I can hear
them now with the same tracks on other Squeezelite systems connected to
active monitors, so is it just an artefact of Squeezelite playback? I
just don't hear it using Foobar2k direct to a DAC.
Changing the ALSA buffer from 80 to 240 has helped a little I think with
one SPDIF DAC system so far. Will do some more testing. Maybe these
monitors are just too revealing! :-)
