My opinion is "anywhere you want". I personally use a SS USB HDD
connected directly to my pcP servers. Others use NAS, you could use a
USB Stick (as you mentioned) if it is big enough for you. I did this for
a friend that has a small library. I personally would avoid storing them
on the same SD as pcP unless backed up (In case SD becomes corrupted).

You also mention "popping the SD to transfer files". Using Samba, your
pcP music storage folder(s) are accessible as a network location (from
say a PC/Mac). Personally, I maintain my library on a PC, and use
freefilesync to mirror the library to the HDD attached to the pi
(through Samba).
