Have you tried to log in through the tex-only console?

login: >console
passwd: [blank]

See if that lets you log in.  Seems like the Security Update did the 
system in?  It was working fine until then?  Maybe it's something 
low-level like a file system problem.  You could try Disk First Aid in 9 
and/or boot into single-user mode (cmd-s at startup) and type in "fsck 
-y".  Do you have enough space on that single partition to house both X 
and 9?  Just some ideas.
