I'm trying to install OS X on an 8500. It's got 128 MB of RAM and a 3 GB disk and a 266 MHz MaxPowr G3 card, all of which have been working great since 1998. It is otherwise stock.
What I've done: - low level formatted the disk, made a single HFS+ partition - installed 9.1 - logged on, allowed the setup program to run, then copied the latest XPostFacto from another machine using AppleShare. - installed 10.0 - logged on, allowed the setup program to run, ran System Preferences to disable screen saver and Energy Saver, enabled SSH logins, turned off auto-login. - rebooted into 9.1 - installed 10.1 - logged on, ran Software Update and installed the offered Oct01 security update - rebooted The machine is now at the login screen. I can SSH in from other machines and happily do anything e.g. run top. But if I try to log in I get an eternal spinning beach ball. Top reports 20% CPU being used by loginwindow, 4% by Window Manager, 2% by kernel_task, 1.3% by top, 0.1% by sshd, machine otherwise idle with 60 MB free RAM. I can still ^Z top and fg it back again, but if I try to do anything else, such as run ps or ls then the ssh session locks up forever. Attempts to ssh in as another session result in no reply and an eventual timeout. It's now impossible to even ping the machine. Any ideas? The G3 card is in there, but I haven't yet enabled the 1 MB L2 cache. My best guess is that something is locking up when it tries to access the disk.
