hmm... kill the finder with command-option-escape after you load up 
system preferences. That'll stop it from driving you crazy for a 
while... to get it to start up again just quit all your programs or 
log out and back in. Meanwhile in system preferences go and add 
another user, make sure it is an admin user, and keep in mind that 
you will *never* use it except in emergencies, so make sure you can't 
forget the password... log in as that user and see if everything 
works. If it does then you can log back in as your regular user, kill 
the finder, and go into your user/library/preferences and delete the 
newest preference files that look like they might be related to the 
finder. Log out and back in again. If the problem is not gone then 
you missed some prefs...

Also you should disable all you login items to make sure they are not 
conflicting either.
