Terry, I am working on a similar issue replacing a 4 GB drive in my 9600 that died recently. I am replacing it with an 18 GB IBM 68 pin drive that is adapted to 50 pin. I got it to show up by Booting from the OS 9.1 CD and using the Drive Setup on the CD. In addition to the SCSI ID, also jumper Auto Start and Disable Unit Attention. My drive will show up and can be formatted, written to, etc. I am still having problems getting it to mount reliably from a cold start. (It always shows up on a reboot) So, I will be tinkering with other issues on it this evening. On thing that IBM mentions in their troubleshooting issues, that may be useful in your case is, termination. They highly recommend putting the drive at the end of the SCSI chain and terminating the SCSI chain by jumpering Enable Active Termination on the drive. Apparently with the adapter, you are in fact leaving those other 18 pins on the drive unterminated, if it is in the middle of the chain. I am working in OS 9.1, so I don't know how it will fare in OSX. I am planning to install OS X on the 9600, but am still working out other issues.
