I had the same problem with a 4gb IBM SCSI drive and Mac OS 9.1. Drive 
set up would not see it. I had to use RESEDIT to get Drive set up.  go 
to:

It has the directions. Hope this helps! With mine I had no problem with 
OSX after I formated it in OS 9.1.
