You can not use Firewire to boot from an Old World Mac period . I've not heard of anyone trying it with OSX since it can't be done in OS 9.x. I'd be very surprised if it worked. The ata/IDE drive is your best bet and newer versions of OSX (10.1.5 and 10.2) are much faster then older versions.
