Incompatible ram has definitely been an issue.  Just for good measure 
I would try the install with the right matched ram using the latest 
version of XPostFacto and disconnecting all scsi devices before the 
install.

Even if you can run X on the lower amount of ram, you could at least 
see if the install works and you're able to boot.
