I thought one of the big reasons for the bump in speeds from the pre-G3 to
G3 chips was the large L2 cache which was soldered on to the card  and
didn't have the limitations of the system bus speed.  None of the 604e chips
were engineered this way.  Umax tried to do it with the cache-doubler card
with the 603e.  Similarly, isn't Apple getting speed bumps by including
larger L3 cache on the new G4 cards?

Are you sure that's the cache? I thought the 9500 had the cache 
soldered to the motherboard, and was not removeable. It may the ROM 
chip, which would probably be required for booting.

Probably, depending on the function. The 604e was a pretty fast 
processor. However, there are no 350 MHz 604e cards that will work in 
a 9500. Those Mach 5 cards only work in later model 86/9600 machines.
