I think I have found the key to why Apple pulled OS X off of pre-G3 systems. In my mind it was primarily because of the graphics hardware, and then maybe the CPU speed/type.
My reasoning? Read the following and decide..... Having put a Radeon 7000 in my G3/400 to use with Jaguar and QE, I put the old Rage 128 (100Mhz v2 card) in my 7300 as it runs OS X to file serve for one of our (less used) networks. I have used it without the Rage 128 but with 4MB VRAM in it before now and it was, frankly, hell, everything was so slow and took so long to run and load. Now however it seems like weight has been lifted off it. It's only a 200MHz 604e so I generally don't expect miracles from it but I think I have just experienced one here. It's a very usable machine now, 10.1.5 is not exactly fast but it is more than adequate for light use it gets when I'm admining it (almost to the extent that it is much nicer than using Remote Desktop). I could even bear using it as an email and browsing station (although IE runs slowly but it does in my G3 too). I think I have struck upon Apple's reasoning. I can also, however, given the extra CPU load, see why they disabled 604 support in 10.2 Jaguar, but they might at least have given us the option of finding out :(. I wish I could try this on a 9600/350, I could see it being extremely tidy, on a par at least with a Beige G3. -- Mark Benson AIM - SilValleyPirate Visit FlatPackMacs online: <http://fpm.gotdns.com> "Never send a human to do a machine's job." -The Matrix -- Unsupported OS X is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> Support Low End Mac <http://lowendmac.com/lists/support.html> Unsupported OS X list info <http://lowendmac.com/lists/unsupported.html> --> AOL users, remove "mailto:" Send list messages to: <mailto:UnsupportedOSX@;mail.maclaunch.com> To unsubscribe, email: <mailto:UnsupportedOSX-off@;mail.maclaunch.com> For digest mode, email: <mailto:UnsupportedOSX-digest@;mail.maclaunch.com> Subscription questions: <mailto:listmom@;lemlists.com> Archive <http://www.mail-archive.com/unsupportedosx%40mail.maclaunch.com/> Using a Mac?
