Curiouser and curiouser it gets. I upgraded to iTunes 3.01 (just in case there were better drivers for my Lite-On CDRW, still listed as 'fully supported' in System Profiler), and dragged an approximated 550 mb folder to the CD, and tried to burn. The Spinning Beachball of Eternity came up. (This hoses things so that I have to turn off the system to get it to reboot properly, force-quitting Finder only wrks about 25% of the time.)
I thought maybe there was some problem with the amount of stuff being burnt, so I transfered a little at a time, dragging the disk to the Burn icon t see when it goes off into beach ball land. EVERY time it popped up the correct dialog asking me if I wanted to burn the cd. Eventually I added all the directories I'd tried unsuccessfully to back up before, and it burned fine. I just successfully burned three cd's with my recalcitrant CDRW this way, including a RW disk, which I'd not succesfully burned before. So my current working hypothesis is that dragging a large number of files at once to the CD somehow corrupted the hidden cd image OSX is creating, something that doing it in batches does not. This is perhaps a problem with my drive controllers, CD Burner itself, or some weird confluence of planetary positions. -- Wherever you go, there you are.
