My recommendations for VM with Mac OS 8.6-9x:
(I don't recommend using VM on versions earlier than 8.6)

Don't use versions of PhotoShop previous to 6 _and_ have VM on. It will
cause your disk to thrash as the two VM schemes fight each other. I have
found that temp files don't always get cleaned up properly when VM is on
when using pre-version 6 PhotoShop, which causes stability problems and
eats HD space.

Illustrator versions from 7 thru 9 don't like VM and can leave old temp
files around when used with VM (like PhotoShop, are they related somehow?).

Make sure your HD has a (mostly) contiguous space for the invisible
swapfile. The more your disk is fragmented, the more you will have
stability problems.

If you use video or audio editing software (Media 100, ProTools, etc) do
not use VM.

If you want to have your PowerBook battery last longer, turn off VM (the
increased HD activity of VM eats power).

If you have a problem with stuttering QT or DVD playback, try turning off VM.

If you have a slow HD (like a 500 MB one from 1992), turn off VM.
