the video card u have is perfect. your CPU is a big factor for mpeg-2 
decoding. a g4 REALLY helps decoding. a fast processor is best.

i have a SCSI pioneer 10/40x drive that is SCSI-3 but is backwards 
compatible down to SCSI-1.

i have also tried a B&W pull (IDE) drive in my s900 that worked like a 
charm.

i think it has to be hacked regardless of drive. but its no biggie.

all drives are sub $200 (except combo or dvd-r). your best bet is eBay. 
it's hard to find stuff like this retail.
