Hello All.I am glad you are happy with your new machine! First off not all of us can just decide to buy a new machine. I've upgraded mine one step at a time when the price was right for an upgrade. You are of course correct that a new machine may well run better then our old unsupported machines. The Apple 8500 machine is one of the harder machines to take apart and upgrade. EDO or FPM ram ( a couple of years ago EDO ram was better in our machines then FPM todays ram I don't think it matters in most machines) can be bought for our machines in the USA for $25.00 128 mb sticks cheap in my opinion. I just added an ATI PC 7000 PCI 32mb Video card bought at CompUSA for $39.00 and flashed to a mac rom by me for free. Not the easiest thing to do but not really hard either. Used a program to turn on Quartz extreme and I've got the fluid video movement DUDE! Ok likely not like your machine but I'm happy and so is my budget!
I'm leaving you all soon, and I want to thank you for you help.
I used 10.2.3 - 4 on a Sonnet G3 upgraded 8500 for about 10 weeks. Overall I
was impressed that Jaguar was so stable on this machine (only 1 KP when
first installing) FireWire worked with an OEM card (for external CD writing)
as long as I didn't write faster than 12x. But I had some (unresolved) USB
printing problems. I.e. I couldn't print to my Epson 760...
I sold my G4 733 before Xmas with the intention of replacing it quickly with
a new MDD. However the rumoured audio noise problems, and the whining fan
noise put me off. I bought one. After 2 hours and a headache I sent it back.
Thus I thought I'd stick with the 8500 until the G5 arrived...
However, a couple of days ago, a G4/533 DP (133MHz bus, 768MB RAM) turned up
at the right price, and the difference is like night and day. This machine
is definitely far superior to the 733 Digital Audio from the same range. Mac
OS X is so f-l-u-i-d, so responsive. I am making no allowances for the
System/hardware. Everything is soooo right.
App's open in 1 or 2 bounces. Window re-sizing though still not perfect, is
OK, but in every other way 10.2.4 on this 533 DP is a wonderful experience,
an absolute pleasure, and after 72 hours of constant use, I haven't stopped
being impressed. I wonder what the 1.42 DP's are like...:-)
Jaguar on the 8500 was usable, was amazing in that it worked at all, let
alone was so stable, but couldn't deliver the fluidity and responsiveness
that I'm now experiencing.
One observation for 'unsupported hardware', the biggest performance drain
with the 8500 was lack of RAM (I only had 224 MB) and the fact that 5v EDO
RAM is so expensive (comparatively) is a shame. (For example, 256MB for this
G4 cost 20)
I would have no hesitation in recommending OS X on unsupported hardware for
all (probably server-type) applications where the UI responsiveness isn't a
key concern. Meanwhile, I'm loving this G4/533 DP.

Some day I'll get a modern machine but not soon as my UMAX S900/J700 clone of an Apple 9600 machine really rocks in OSX jaguar! Best of luck Will S
