it's not really much of an issue for me. i figure that when it won't
upgrade anymore, and i need to have a newer box, i'll buy a used Mac. all
of mine are used and i got them for a steal. 750.00 for a year old 700
iBook, 650.00 for a 450 G4 tower with DVD-RAM, paid over a grand for my
Beige DT with 350 upgrade and a DVD player, but that was a long time ago
and they were going for alot more back then. paid 450.00 for an 8500/200
around the same time, but it's been sold after years of good service. i
think they were going for 750.00 or so then.

the Unsupported Mac i have is a Power Computing Powercenter purchased for
1.00 on ebay(cost 45.00 to ship it though:-)). 304 megs ram, 266 G3, 30 gig
ide drive, USB, 16 meg ATI Rage Orion, 32x CDROM. i guess i have a total of
275.00 or so in it total. i know, but it was fun to build and runs great.

it's my moms, and she doesn't do alot other than surfing and typing, so the
need for an upgrade is a long way away. i even disabled Software Update
since she is in Ohio and i'm in NC. it would only confuse her, and if there
was a problem it's harder to fix long distance. when it's time, a used iMac
CRT model will fill the bill for her nicely. 266s are very cheap.

i have enjoyed skirting the upgrade push by using XPostfacto and getting a
few extra years out of an otherwise scrap machine. but i think, in a few
years at best, putting a lot into upgrading an Unsupported Mac just won't
make sense anymore. G3's will be so cheap. Beige models and iMac CRTs are
already there really.

Who wants to join the "When will we get left behind" pool?

I say we'll be fine until OS11.
