I don't know when it started, I found out yesterday, when I inserted a new audio CD I had just bought. I was going to use iTunes to copy the songs to my hard drive. iTunes visits each song for a fraction of a second, and then moves on, without emitting a sound, to the next song, and so on, until it reaches the end of the CD, and then stops. At first, I thought it was iTunes 4, which I had just installed a few days previously. To verify, I first inserted a CD that had played & copied before (some months ago), and got the same result. Then I quit iTunes and launched Quicktime. It fails to even open the song file, saying that there is an input/output error. So, I popped out the CD, and put in a data disc. I was able to launch programs off the disc, read files from the disc, etc. -- so, data discs work just fine.

Lastly, I opened Console.app, to look at any error messages that may have been printed there. The only thing definitely related was a message indicating that the disc mounted successfully. After that, nothing. However, I noticed something else, both puzzling and disturbing: an error message that repeats about every 2-3 seconds, starting from the moment the machine finished booting up. The message reads, "Looking for devices matching vendor ID=1193 and product ID=8717."

My configuration is this:
PM7500 w/Powerlogix G3/400
256 MB RAM
2 internal SCSI hard drives
Sony CD-ROM drive (internal SCSI)
Firewire Depot Firewire card
IOGear USB 2.0 card
ATI Xclaim 3D+
Canon USB scanner
Belkin USB hub (w/Palm Hotsync cradle attached)
1 external Firewire drive attached
OS X.2.6 (upgraded shortly after release), iTunes 4.0.1 & QT 6.3 (both upgraded after the first symptoms showed).

I've had OS X installed on this machine for about 8 months, with no previous problems. I ripped my entire CD collection (nearly 800 of them) to MP3s on this machine. I upgraded iTunes and Quicktime, thinking that might be the problem, but nooooo.......

BTW, the first time I launched Apple System Profiler, after I notice the symptoms, I got the spinning losenge, and the startup drive began chattering away -- for a looooooong time. After some time, I tried to force quit, but wound up getting the spinning losenge in the Finder, too. Nothing I did would kill either of the programs. Before I had a chance to give it the 3-finger salute, the Finder announced that it had run out of disc space (I had had 1.4 GB available, previously), suggesting that I quit programs and close windows. However, Apple System Profiler was still busy, and I couldn't force quit it, so I went ahead and reset the computer. When the machine had finished starting up, I had all that disc space back, but I still couldn't/can't play audio CDs.

Can anyone tell me what's the prob? A clue on the audio CD issue, or the repeating error message in Console.app issue, would be most appreciated.
