It'll work. Canon just doesn't want to have to deal with technical support for machines that have the third pary cards in them. The only items that won't work as they should are devices that need to be accessed at startup. This is limited pretty much to just keyboards. The keyboard will work (I used a Microsoft USB keyboard exclusivly on my S900 for years), but not until the machine has gone someway into loading the OS.

The same applies to USB Wacom tablets, and to some extent DVI attached monitors.
First the extension(s) for the USB card need to load so Mac know what to do with card then it can load (use) drivers for the other third party devices. If USB on motherboard then bus gets power as soon as power switched on. This does all seem a bit backwards as the load order of some extensions must be before the PCI USB card is 'activated' - I'm just not sure how OS addresses drivers for devices it cannot see. Try leaving external zip (or similar) off and the zip drive will not function if you turn it on after booting your mac (Unless you use Iomega Guest). If my memory serves me correctly the USB keyboard needs to be connected directly to USB port and not through a hub on later Macs otherwise I think they cannot see them?
